Eggnog French Toast

Eggnog French Toast is the perfect breakfast for any holiday morning.  All the great flavors of eggnog in a delicious breakfast.  

Do you have a traditional breakfast you do every Christmas or for the holidays? In my family it this French Toast Recipe. But after making it with eggnog, I feel like we need to rethink going forward. Cooking with eggnog just takes things to a whole new level!

I am not a fan of drinking it at all! But make Eggnog Muffins or Eggnog Coffee Cake and I can’t get enough!

What You’ll Need

  • Eggnog
  • Eggs
  • Cinnamon
  • Nutmeg
  • Salt
  • Thick Cut Bread
  • Butter

What Kind Of Bread For French Toast

What kind of bread you use is entirely up to you. You just want to us something that is thick, not your traditionally sandwich bread.

  • Brioche Bread
  • Sourdough Bread
  • Thick Cut Italian or French Bread
  • Texas Toast

The bread is obviously what makes French Toast delicious, so you want to use something high quality that tastes great. About 1 inch thick is what you are looking for, much thicker and it will just be dry and “bready” in the middle, thinner and it is kind of mushy.

How To Make Eggnog French Toast

  1. Heat a griddle or large skillet over medium heat. You want to make sure whatever surface you are using to cook your French Toast on is nice and hot when you start cooking. If you are making a lot, and want to keep it warm while you cook the rest, preheat your oven to 250º as well.
  2. In a large bowl beat together eggnog, eggs, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until very well combined.
  3. Slice French bread into 1 inch thick slices. Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture to coat both sides.
  4. Melt some butter over the surface of the griddle, and place dipped pieces of bread on the hot griddle. Cook for about 2-3 minutes per side, or until it is golden brown.
  5. Repeat with remaining bread. Place cooked slices on a baking sheet and keep them warm in the oven if necessary.
  6. Serve topped with maple syrup and whipped cream if desired

Recipe Tips

  • You want to use bread that has been around for a couple days. If you have super fresh bread doesn’t soak up the egg mixture as well. So if you have a few slices at the end of your loaf they are perfect!
  • Save slices of bread whenever you are getting to the end of a loaf. Start a freezer safe bag with a couple slices, and keep adding to it. You cut down on waste, and will have the perfect bread on hand when you need it!
  • I love using an electric griddle for French Toast. It gets super hot, and you can cook a lot at one time. I have on like this Electric Griddle I got over 20 years ago when we got married, and still use it today.
  • Make sure to let your bread soak in the egg mixture for a little while, to really soak up the flavor. Depending on how thick your bread is will determine how long you let it sit. For about 1 inch thick pieces, I leave it in there for maybe 2 minutes.

Trust me, even if you don’t think you like Eggnog, you are going to want to give this recipe a try. You would have to pay me quite a bit of money to actually drink it, I am not a fan! But once you add it to baked good or start cooking with it, it turns into something magical!

Ingredients

  • 3 cups Eggnog
  • 5 whole large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 12-16 slices thick cut bread
  • 1 Tablespoon butter

Instructions

  1. Heat a griddle or large skillet over medium heat.
  2. In a large bowl beat together eggnog, eggs, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until very well combined.
  3. Slice French bread into 1 inch thick slices.
  4. Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture to coat both sides.
  5. Melt about half of the butter over the surface of the griddle.
  6. Place dipped pieces of bread on the hot griddle. Cook for 2-3 minutes per side. Repeat with remaining bread.
  7. Serve immediately topped with maple syrup and whipped cream if desired
