Happy Valentine’s Day! Hug and kiss the ones you love today. Tell them you love them. That is about the extent of my Valentine’s Day celebration. I made my husband and son each a cute little card, but that is about it. I am out of Valentine’s Day themed treats 🙁 Here they are again…
Homemade brownies just might be my all time favorite dessert. They can be loaded with candy, topped with chocolate frosting, or even just dusted with powdered sugar.
Brownies from scratch are so easy to make, if you give it a chance you will ditch the box mix forever! Seriously just a handful of ingredients, about the same amount of time, and you can have super fudgy and delicious brownies.
How to Make Brownies
- Butter vs vegetable oil - really either works, it depends on the recipe. I usually use oil, but have a couple recipes with butter. Butter can be a little more greasy if you use too much. And it gives it a slightly different flavor. But both work and taste great.
- Cocoa powder vs melted chocolate - again both work. You can even look at the back of your cocoa powder container to see what the substitution is. So if you don't have one, you can definitely substitute the other.
- Use a spatula - you do not need an electric mixer for brownies, just a bowl and a spatula.
- Pans - I like a metal baking pan for baking brownies. Glass works, but I think the texture is different. I don't get the same edges when I used glass.
The best brownie recipe is really subject to your own opinion. I have been using the same base brownies recipe since I was a little girl. But I am always trying new recipes when I see them!
So ditch the box mix and start making homemade brownies today! Trust me, anyone of these will be a hit!

A couple weeks ago I saw a recipe for Peanut Butter Cookie Dough Brownies over at The Farm Girl. I could not get in the kitchen to make these fast enough. I was trying to come up with all sorts of excuses why I needed to make them. The one I ended up going with? …
Let it be known (not that it was a secret before), I like peanut butter and chocolate together. I have seen so many different versions of peanut butter and chocolate brownies floating around. Some have peanut butter cups, some have just peanut butter, others have peanut butter chips or other candy. Well I had to…
