DIY Spice Rack

My spice cabinet has been a mess since we moved into this house, last July.  Every time I opened the cupboard I was annoyed, and spent forever digging for what I needed.  We had been talking about how to fix it and make it functional, pretty much since the day we moved in.  It was one of those things that just got pushed to the back burner though.  I finally got fed up enough, and took matters into my own hands.

I contacted Freund Container Supply to see if they would like to work together on my project.  They were excited at the prospect, and gladly sent me a case of the containers that I picked out.  Then it was time to get to work, and actually make my vision a reality!

First thing I had to do was decide on the size of my spice rack.  Based on my kitchen, we decided that 16 inches by 20 inches would be perfect.  I went to Michael’s craft store to find a good quality frame that I wanted for the project.  I made sure to find one that had a good mounting system, so it would be easier to hang on the wall.  It was going to be holding a decent amount of weight, so I wanted something that was attached to the frame, not the cardboard backing.

magnets

To get the spice jars to stick we used magnets.  There are so many to pick from, so we ordered a few different sizes from K&J Magnets.  In the end, I think the 9/16ths inch size one worked the best.  It was strong enough to hold the full jars, and not have them slip around.  We used super glue to attach the magnets to the back of each jar.

The jars then needed something to stick to.  Lowe’s and Home Depot both had sheets of metal available, but they were so heavy.  I finally asked someone, and they suggested sheets of galvanized duct that is used in HVAC systems.  It is much lighter weight, and much cheaper.  It comes in various sizes, so you can get what is close to what you need.  Then use tin snips, or something similar to cut it down to the size of your frame.

If you wanted an industrial look, you could leave the metal exposed.  I was going for a different look, so I got a swatch of fabric a few inches bigger than my frame.  Stretch the fabric and attach it to the back side of the metal sheet, using hot glue.

You then remove the glass from the frame, and insert your sheet of metal, put the cardboard backing in, and latch it in place.  The final step is to label your jars.  There are lots of ways you can do this.  I chose to buy labels, and print them.  I used these 2 inch circle labels.  There were lots of templates to choose from, so I picked my favorite and printed my labels.

Finally, attached the labels.  Then you can hang your frame on the wall, and arrange your spices how you want.  I always put my in alphabetical order, so I can find them easily.

not sure what I would use this on for sure...I like the spice rack you did. That would be one idea. Or some glass bottles to store random stuff in? Not sure yet, too many options!

I'd buy some cute glass deco bottles so I can finally make homemade vanilla extract and gift it to family during the holidays.
