Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookies – classic chocolate chip cookies that come out thick, chewy, and perfect every time!
The perfect chocolate chip cookie is a treat you should never be denied. Especially when they are warm and fresh out of the oven. They are pretty impossible to stay away from. I grew up making these Chocolate Chip Cookies and they were a staple in my childhood.
Today I have updated my go to recipe and these perfect chocolate chip cookies are my go to. They are thick, chewy, and bake up perfectly every time!
There are so many different kinds of cookies out there. And people love them all. There are die hard crispy cookie people. People who love thick cookies, people who need all the chocolate in the cookies and more. Me? I like them thick, chewy, plenty of chocolate and for them to stay soft. It has taken years of testing, but these are it!
The key to making soft chocolate chip cookies? Cornstarch. There is something it does in the batter that just leaves them soft, they bake up thicker and they are perfectly chewy. These are definitely the best chocolate chip cookies, and the most requested at our house.
You can use this as a base recipe for just about anything. Skillet Cookie is delicious with this cookie recipe. That might be my ultimate weakness when it comes to desserts. Or you can bake them into bars if you don’t want to shape a bunch of individual cookies.
Also just about any mix in works! I use semi-sweet chocolate chips, but dark chocolate, milk chocolate, butterscotch, peanut butter, white chocolate and more are all equally delicious. How to make them over the top? A combo of chocolate is incredible! Just trust me on that one.
These perfect chocolate chip cookies have become a staple in our house, and something I have become known for. We make them for the holidays and add M&M’s to the top as well. You really can do anything with them, and everyone is going to love them.
So if you want to mix up your chocolate chip cookies these are a must try!

- 3/4 cup butter, , softened
- 3/4 cup brown sugar

- 2 tsp vanilla
- 2 cups flour
- 2 tsp cornstarch
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp salt

- In a stand mixer cream butter and both sugars together until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes. Mix in the egg and vanilla. Add flour, cornstarch, baking soda and salt. Mix until everything is combined. Fold in the chocolate chips.
- Chill the dough for 30 minutes. The longer you chill the thicker your cookies.

- Scoop golfball size balls of dough onto a baking sheet. Bake for 9 minutes, until the edge are just golden brown. The center will appear underdone.
- Let cookies cool for 5 minutes before removing to a wire rack.

I am a cookie snob. I turn my nose up at store bought cookies and even most friends’ home made cookies don’t make the cut. I tried making these this afternoon and this is now my go-to recipe. Simple, straightforward, and unbelievably delicious. My husband and I hid behind the counter so we could have another after we told our toddler we were all done. : )

This is the best cookie recipe ever. I will never use another recipe. I put the finished product in the fridge and they taste like cookie dough fudge…but less sweet.

I tried the recipe and the cookies were fantabulous! Everyone who tried them were addicted. Interesting to note: Very crumbly to place on sheet. And I didn’t use the cornstarch (we didn’t have any). Making them again this week and going to not refrigerate, or maybe just for less time… 😉
Erin S says
Sounds like the dough might have dried out a little in the fridge, maybe try covering them next time. Refrigerating gets the dough cold enough, so they stay puffy during cooking, and don’t spread thin. So you can do less time in the fridge, just don’t skip it 🙂
jules says
i did cover the batter– will try again chilling for less time 😉

I found this recipe via Pintrest. I’ve been on the search for the perfect CCC recipe for years now. I tried this one and while the cookies are delish, mine didn’t come out chewy. I even took them out early. Any suggestions?
Erin S says
How well did you cream your butters and sugar together? Did you let them chill thoroughly before baking? Feel free to email me – dinnersdishesanddesserts (at) gmail (dot) com. I will gladly walk you thru what you did, to see if we can figure it out!!

Just made this on this cold, icy day here in northwest NJ and they’re perfect. I used mini chocolate chips b/c that’s what I had in the house and they worked out great. I made smaller cookies b/c my daughter likes things that are bite sized and I’ve got about 4 dozen or so out of the batch. Thanks for sharing the recipe!

So I made this recipe, LOVE the flavor of this chocolate chip cookie! I followed your recipe exactly, but it didn’t quite turn out how yours looked. I put the dough in the fridge for 30 minutes, and then took them out and shaped them to the size of a golfball (maybe a tad smaller). I only made about 18 cookies, and they weren’t big at all. After 9 minutes in the oven they were still mostly in the shape of a ball. Do you have any tips? I ended up cooking them for 15-18 minutes, and took them out as soon as they were not in the shape of a ball. They were still soft luckily, but not super soft.
Erin S says
Camilia, I would try pressing down on the dough slightly. If they don’t spread in baking, you will want to press them down before you bake them. How long you cream the butter, humidity, ovens, altitude, and other factors can affect that. Hope that works for you!

will try this one this week, but will have to add nuts!

It’s the best recipe ever for cookies. I’m never going to use a different recipe. I put in the refrigerator the final product and taste like a cookie dough fudge… just less soft.
