Baked Ham with a Tangerine Glaze

Baked Ham with a Tangerine Glaze – a delicious oven baked ham with a sweet tangerine glaze.  Perfect for any holiday table.

Do you have traditions in your family for holidays?  At my house we have had baked ham pretty much every year since I was a little kid. Served with cheesy potato casserole every year.

The one thing that did change was dessert.  Since there was always so much candy around, we didn’t always have a formal dessert.  But I am all for French Silk Pie, it has become my own tradition as I have gotten older.

My family thinks that we should have Cinnamon Rolls for breakfast on every holiday.  So Easter isn’t any different. The day starts with a special breakfast and ends with an easy baked ham that is coated in a tasty tangerine glaze.

How to Bake A Ham

  1. Most hams you buy in the grocery store are precooked, so you are really just warming them up again and giving them flavor with a glaze.
  2. Start by placing your ham, cut side down, in a large baking dish.  I prefer to use a spiral cut ham because they cook way faster, are super easy to serve, and are always delicious.
  3. Place the ham in a 350 degree oven and cook for 10-12 minutes per pound.
  4. Pour the glaze over the ham and baste every 30 minutes
  5. I like my ham to be hot, so I usually go more towards the 12 minute end, otherwise I find the center to still be slightly cooled.

For years when I made a ham, I never used a glaze. I skipped the packet that came with the ham and never made one of my own.  Well all that changed when a friend gave me this tangerine glaze recipe!  It is an easy ham glaze that makes your ham go from delicious to over the top amazing!

How to Glaze a Ham

  1. This glaze is a mix of brown sugar, tangerines, tangerine (or orange juice) and a few spices.  To make the glaze you simmer everything on the stove until it is thick.
  2. If you are using a spiral cut ham I pour the glaze over the ham right when I am going to start baking it.  Then baste the ham every 30 minutes.
  3. Basting the ham means just spooning the liquid that is in the bottom of your pan over your ham.
  4. If you are using a whole ham that is not cooked, wait to pour the glaze over until you have about 2 hours left in the cooking process.

Baked Ham with a Tangerine Glaze - a delicious oven baked ham with a sweet tangerine glaze.  Perfect for any holiday table.

Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 4 hours
Total Time 4 hours 15 minutes

Ingredients

  • 8-10 lb bone-in ham
  • Salt and pepper
  • 1 bunch fresh sage leaves
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 cup butter, softened and cut into chunks
  • 2 whole tangerines, sliced thin and seeds removed (or oranges)
  • 2 cups tangerine juice, (orange or grapefruit juice work well)
  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1/4 tsp whole cloves
  • 2 lbs carrots

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 300. Place the ham in a large roasting pan, fat side up. With a sharp knife, score the ham with cuts across the skin, about 2 inches apart and 1/2 inch deep. Cut diagonally down the slashes to form a diamond pattern.
  2. Season the meat with salt and pepper.
  3. Chop the sage leaves and put them in a bowl with the olive oil to make a paste. Rub sage-oil on the ham and be sure to get the flavor into the slits. Bake the ham for 2 hours.
  4. To make the Tangerine Glaze: Place a saucepan over medium heat. Add the chunks of butter, tangerines, tangerine juice, brown sugar, water, and spices. Slowly cook the liquid down to a syrupy glaze. This takes about 30-40 minutes.
  5. After the ham has been cooking 2 hours, pour the tangerine glaze all over it, including the pieces of fruit and spices. Cook for another 1 1/2 hours, basting with the juices every 30 minutes.
  6. If using a spiral cut ham or pre-cooked ham, pour the glaze over and baste every 30 minutes from the start of cooking. Total baking time will be about 12-14 minutes per pound.
  7. Scatter the carrots around the ham and cook for an additional 30 minutes, until the carrots are tender.

Notes

Size of ham will determine cooking time.
