I am excited for today. I am teaming up with Oldways/Whole Grain Council to bring you Whole Grain Sampling Day! I was asked to be a whole grain ambassador and help spread the word about today, and how important whole grains are. Plus, because we are all about sharing around here, I have a great giveaway to go along with it!!
I was sent a big box of whole grain snacks and products to try. Everything from crackers, to chips, to cookies, to pasta. I have not had a chance to try everything, but I am loving what I have tried. I set out 3 different type of whole grain crackers (Wheat Thins, Brown Rice Triscuits, and Engine 2 Crispbread) as part of our appetizer selection on Easter. Everyone loved them, and they disappeared quickly. Included were tortilla chips from Way Better Snacks. I just started a fitness challenge this month, and these chips make me feel so much better about snacking. They are made for sprouted ingredients such as quinoa, flax seed, black beans, and chia seeds.
According to a study in Scotland from 2010; 3 servings of whole grains a day can cut blood pressure, and reduce the risk of a stroke by 15-20%. Even eating an average of 2 1/2 servings of whole grain food each day can lower your risk of cardiovascular disease by almost 25%. You can find whole grains in so many different things; brown rice, soba noodles, whole wheat flour, corn, oats, quinoa, wild rice, and more (most of which happen to be gluten-free as well). Most cereals, crackers, and even snack bars have a whole grain variety out there now. So it is really easy to to make sure you get your whole grains. You can go to Whole Grains Council for even more recipe ideas.
Join us a noon EST today (4/3/13) for a “Whole Grain Toast” on Twitter. Share your favorite whole grain, share pictures of you eating your whole grain lunch….anything goes! Just use the hashtag#SampleWholeGrains
