Onion Soup Mix Recipe – make your own soup mix at home with just a few simple ingredients. You can control the sodium and chemicals and use it in all the ways you would use the store bought mix.
I love making homemade mixes at home, so you can control the ingredients. Store bought is easy and a great shortcut, and there will never be any judgement from me on using it. But sometimes you want to know exactly what you are eating or cut out a certain ingredient.
This onion soup mix is a copycat recipe of the classic Lipton Onion Soup Mix. When I was growing up, we always had a box in the pantry, and used it in so many different recipes.
The soup mix you buy in the store most likely contains MSG. A lot of people like to avoid that and there are a fair number of people who are allergic to it. So making your own seasoning mixes at home are so easy and great to do. This Homemade Ranch Dressing Mix is another great one if you really want to know what is in your food.
One of the other things you can control is the sodium when you make your own mixes. Store bought mixes are notoriously high in sodium. Most of it comes from the beef bullion in the recipe, but you can find low sodium beef bullion to use and it cuts down on it drastically!
Onion Soup Mix Ingredients
- Beef Granules – look for low sodium if you want to limit the sodium in this recipe
- Dried Onion Flakes
- Onion Powder
- Garlic Powder
- Dried Parsley Flakes
- Celery Seed
- Paprika
- Black Pepper
How To Make Onion Soup Mix
- Mix together all of the ingredients in a bowl until they are well combined.
- Place in an air tight container and store until ready to use.
Storage
You can store this soup mix in an air tight container for up to 6 months in the pantry. There is no need to refrigerate this, nothing in the ingredients requires refrigeration.
This recipe makes enough for 2 uses, but you can make double, triple or more and store it in the pantry for last minute uses.
How To Use Onion Soup Mix
This recipe makes enough to replace two envelopes of the Lipton’s Onion Soup Mix. Use about 3 1/2 Tablespoons of mixture to replace 1 envelope called for in a recipe.
To make Onion Soup mix 4 cups of boiling water with seasoning mix and cook for about 5 minutes.
To make Onion Dip mix 1 (16 oz) container of sour cream with seasoning mix and stir until combined. Serve with chips and store in an air tight container in the fridge for up to a week.
Great Recipes To Use Soup Mix

- Great sprinkled over potatoes, like Air Fryer Potato Wedges
- Turkey Burgers
- Use it to season chicken and make Air Fryer Chicken Breasts
- Add flavor to Beef Stew

I used this in pot roast since the store was out. It came out amazing!
Wow what a simple way to prepare some tasty soup!
Awesome, I’m so glad to be able to make my own homemade version without all the junk ingredients in the store-bought stuff!
Me too!
This is SO good!
This is perfect! I’ll be keeping a batch on hand at all times.
wow! This is genius! Love to have this mix on hand. I should try the onion dip.
This is a new staple at my house!! Thanks for sharing the recipe!
I had a similar recipe about 10 years ago but went looking for it lately and spent hours combing through Pinterest, Copy Me That and hand written recipes but never found it. Since I can’t find the Mrs Grass’ version to make certain recipes. this makes me so happy to find it again!! I swear the recipe I had had nutritional yeast in it but this one is sure to suffice.
Where and what brand did you use of the beef granules. All I seem to see is bouillon or paste?
Here is the google search results – https://www.google.com/search?q=beef+granules&rlz=1C1CHBF_enUS877US878&oq=beef+granu&aqs=chrome.0.0i512j69i57j0i512l3j0i22i30l2j0i15i22i30l2j0i22i30.3569j0j4&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
There are a few brands. If you search for low sodium beef granules there are other brands that come up as well. Herb Ox is what I have to cut down on the salt, but Knorr is a readily available one.
@Erin S, knorr has msg
I’m in the uk… what amount of water do u put with this?
See the How To Use Onion Soup Mix section of the post. It has instructions for making it into a soup or making it into a dip.
