Christmas Peppermint Patties – Red, white and green striped cool mint patties dipped in dark chocolate. An easy homemade candy for the holidays.
Peppermint patties are one of my favorite treats. They are just so cool and refreshing with that little bit of chocolate. And honestly, they are shockingly easy to make at home! These are dressed for Christmas, but you can follow the same recipe and just make them all white as well.

Peppermint is a must for the holidays. It can be Peppermint French Silk Pie or Peppermint Hot Chocolate, but the flavor is everywhere during the month of December.
Taking the classic peppermint patty and getting it all ready for Christmas is just a fun idea! You can really use any coloring you want to make them fit for any holiday or get together you want. Or you can leave them white to make the classic version.
What You’ll Need
Be sure to scroll to the bottom of the post for the FULL PRINTABLE recipe card.
- Powdered Sugar
- Corn Syrup
- Milk
- Shortening – you want the solid shortening sold in the baking aisle
- Peppermint Extract
- Vanilla Extract
- Dark Chocolate
- Food Coloring – gel based coloring works best and makes the mint layer not seize up.
Recipe Tips
- You can use natural food coloring if you don’t want to use traditional food dye. Or you can just leave it out and have white if you prefer.
- Dark chocolate works well with the sweet filling, it is the traditional chocolate. But you can use any variety you like.
- I like to top with sprinkles because it helps cover up any imperfections in dipping.
- When you are making your dough, try to divide into really even balls. So when you roll it out and stack they are all the same size.
- The stripes looks festive and complicated, but are so easy! Just roll each color into the same size and thickness, stack them on top of each other, and roll into a log. Way easier than you would think.
Storage
Just like the traditional candy, you can store these at room temperature and they will last for a couple weeks. You can store them together in an airtight container or you can individually wrap them as well.

Christmas Peppermint Patties
Ingredients
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 3 tablespoons corn syrup
- 3 tablespoons milk
- 3 tablespoons shortening
- 2 teaspoons peppermint extract
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 pound dark dipping chocolate
- Red and green food coloring, gel colors work best
Instructions
- In a stand mixer combine powdered sugar, corn syrup, milk, shortening, peppermint, and vanilla extract. Once mostly together turn onto a work surface dusted with powdered sugar. Using your hands, knead dough until it is a smooth ball of dough. Add a tiny bit more milk or more powdered sugar if necessary.
- Divide dough into 3 even balls. In a bowl mix red food coloring into one ball, and green into the other.
- Roll each ball of dough into a log about 6 inches long. Start by placing one log between 2 sheets of parchment paper or plastic wrap. Using a rolling pin, gently roll until it is a rectangle about 10×12-inch. Complete this step with the remaining 2 colors. Set sheets on a baking tray, still in parchment paper, and let set in fridge for 15-20 minutes.
- Once sheets are chilled, remove top layer of parchment paper from each color. Lay one sheet on work surface. Top with another color, remove parchment paper. Top with last layer, removing parchment paper.
- Once 3 layers are stacked, gently roll to seal and get rid of any bubbles.
- Trim edges, to create a neat rectangle. Starting with long side, use bottom layer of parchment paper to help roll into a log. Freeze dough for 1 hour.
- Remove frozen log from freezer. Cut into 1/4-inch disks.
- Melt dark dipping chocolate according to the package directions. Using a fork dip each disk into chocolate, gently shaking off excess. Place on a lined cookie sheet. Top immediately with sprinkles, if using. Repeat with remaining disks. Let harden completely before serving.
