Make your own Cajun Seasoning at home in just 5 minutes, with spices you probably already have on hand! Control the heat, the salt and know exactly what is in it!
I love Cajun Seasoning. The spices, the flavor, the heat…it is just such a great spice blend to use. You can make Cajun Sausage Pasta you can make Jambalaya or you can make Cajun Alfredo. So many great options. But my one problem is it seems that most brands are so salty. I can’t add enough of the seasoning to get the flavor I want, without it being taken over by salt.
So I started making my own, with spices I already had on hand. And it takes 5 minutes to make as much or as little as you want!
What Is Cajun Seasoning
Cajun seasoning is a spice bland that is comes from Louisiana, and has become very popular with Cajun and Creole style dishes. Tony Chacheres has become the main brand that most stores carry and people know about. Slap Yo’ Mamma is another brand that is gaining popularity, but isn’t quite as widely available.
The base of cajun seasoning is paprika, and then it adds garlic powder, oregano and a bunch of other common spices to make a super flavorful and spicy blend.
Why You’ll Love This Homemade Cajun Seasoning
- Easy – these are all basic spices that you probably already have in your pantry, and if not, they are super easy to come by in any major grocery store.
- Fast – just 5 minutes, and this spice blend is done and ready to use!
- Long Shelf Life – this is just a basic spice blend, so it will last in an airtight container for at least a year if you are starting with fresh spices.
- Control Ingredients – if you are a person that doesn’t like a lot of heat, but likes the flavor of the spices you can cut back on the cayenne. Or if you like heat, add more. Super customizable to get the flavor that you want! Plus you can cut back on the salt, no added sugars, and you know exactly what is in it.
How To Make Cajun Seasoning
- Measure. Measure all of the spices into a small bowl or jar or whatever you want to store your seasoning blend in.
- Mix. Place the lid on the jar, use a whisk, seal the bag or whatever you need to do to make sure the spices don’t fall out. And shake, stir or mix until everything is well combined.
- Store. Put a label on the mixture, so you know what it is, and store in the pantry with the rest of your spices.
Recipe Tips
- Experiment. This is the version of spice blend that I like, but if you want more heat add more cayenne, if you want less salt, cut back. If you really like garlic and want more, add it. As written the recipe makes a relatively small amount, so try different versions and get your perfect blend.
- Fresh Spices. The key to cooking and getting the best flavor is always using fresh ingredients. And spices are no exception. Technically they don’t go bad, but they do lose their flavor. So check the dates on your spices, and if they are more than a year old, it is best to start fresh.
- Storage. Cajun Seasoning will last for at least 12 months if you start with fresh spices. If you start with older spices, it will just lose its flavor faster. Put a label on it, so you know when you made it (and what it is), and store in a cool dark place.
How To Use Cajun Seasoning
You can use this spice blend in any recipe that calls for cajun seasoning, like Spicy Cajun Dip. But you can also use it when making anything you want a burst of flavor for.
