Gin and Tonic – a great way to enjoy your favorite gin. A cool and refreshing cocktail with gin, tonic water and lime wedges.

I love fun cocktails. Going out to restaurants and seeing their interesting drinks and delicious combinations is always fun.  But there are classics like a Vodka Cranberry that you can just fall back on and make when you are at home.

Whenever my dad goes out, he always orders a Vodka Gimlet. I like to mix it up some, and this gin and tonic is one of my new favorites.  I was kind of hooked on Vodka Soda for awhile, but I recently discovered gin and how good it is!  A friend introduced it to me, and I am not looking back!

So what is a gin a tonic?  It is a super simple cocktail made with gin and tonic water.  It is usually served with lime wedges, but I have seen lemon a couple times a well.  The ratio of gin to tonic water is up for debate.  I prefer 1 part gin to 2 parts tonic water.

Using a good quality gin is really important, because it is what comes through.  You aren’t covering up the flavor of it with fruit or anything else, so you want to make sure it is one you like.  Some gins are peppery, some gins like Hendricks has cucumber and some floral notes. So you just have to pick one you like the flavor of and use it in this recipe. The first time I had a gin and tonic was in collage.  Probably about the same time I first tried a Long Island Iced Tea.  But in college it was cheap gin, and I was not a fan.  Today I can tell the difference in quality, and I am all over this refreshing drink.

How to Make and Gin and Tonic

A gin and tonic recipe is super simple. Really it just has  two ingredients, so you want to make sure they are good quality. And you want to make sure you have plenty of ice, because it should be served nice and cold! I start with 2 ounces of gin and then top with 4 ounces of tonic water. A squeeze of lime and you are done.  Could not be easier!  Tonic water is sweet, it contains sugar, so you don’t need to add any simple syrup or anything else to it.  Just clean and simple.

I am usually a wine drinker when I am at home. So a red wine spritzer is a fun cocktail that I like to make, but this is a great way to mix things up.  Plus you can just make 1 on a Friday night, which is the perfect way to end the night!
