Ice Cream Sundae Bar – set up a build-your-own ice cream sundae bar for your guests complete with all your favorite toppings, whipped cream, cherries, and all sorts of ice cream varieties!
What is more fun than a build your own ice cream sundae bar? I mean you walk up to a table full of a variety of ice cream, bowls of different toppings, canisters of whipped cream and an empty bowl for you to fill up! You can go basic or you can go all out that is totally up to you!
I love entertaining in the summer and having friends over outside. It is great to grill and then set up a dessert bar where everyone can just go crazy! This DIY Sundae Bar is such a simple idea, all you have to do is buy your favorite toppings and then set them out for people. And if you are feeling ambitious, you can even make your own Hot Fudge Sauce or you can go simple and buy a bottle of chocolate sauce. That is the beauty of this, it is super customizable and easy to have everything you need on hand at any time.
The first thing about setting up a sundae bar is the ice cream! Today I am using Open Nature® Scandal-Less Ice Cream. I love that it comes in pint sized containers, so I can pick up a couple flavors and everyone can have their favorite! Open Nature provides a high quality ice cream and they even have lots of non-dairy frozen dessert options for the whole family. I am in the Denver area, where they are exclusively sold at my Safeway stores. You can shop for these products at the Albertsons Companies family of stores OR ONLINE.
One really nice thing about Open Nature is the non-dairy desserts they offer. So many people avoid dairy, so you can pick up sorbet, or ice cream that is made with almond milk, cashew milk, oat milk, and even coconut milk. That means that no matter who you are serving this to, there will be an option for them.
Ice Cream Sundae Toppings
The possibilities are literally endless when it comes to toppings. Pick and choose based on what goes with the flavor of ice cream you are using. Here are some of my favorites that go with just about anything.
- Mini Chocolate Chips
- Chopped Nuts
- Chocolate Sauce
- Whipped Cream
- Maraschino Cherries
- Marshmallows
- Fresh Fruit
- Crushed Cookies
How to Make and Ice Cream Sundae Bar
- Divide whatever toppings you are using into small bowls or glass jars so people can see what they are. Just put a little spoon in each to make it easy for serving. Picking your toppings is the hardest part of this sundae bar.
- Set up bowls and spoons and then at the end of the table don’t forget the napkins! Ice cream can get messy, especially when kids are involved.
- Open each container of ice cream and let people scoop what they want into their bowl.
- You can even set out ice cream cones for people to fill if they are not big into toppings.
How Much Ice Cream for an Ice Cream Sundae Bar
This is the most important part, you don’t want to run out! I like to count on 2 good sized scoops per person. This is the equivalent of about 1/2 pint per person. Some people will take more and some less, but I find this is a good average amount to count on.
It is super easy to measure with this Open Nature Scandal-less ice cream, because they come in pint sized containers. It is the perfect guilt-free indulgence with no artificial colors or flavors and it features a clean list of ingredients. Depending on the flavor you pick it has between 60-80% less calories than traditional ice cream, with 40-50% less fat, and only 240-370 calories for the entire pint. So if you have any leftovers, you won’t feel guilty enjoying a few extra bites!
A DIY Sundae Bar is such a fun and easy way to entertain. Everyone has fun making their own creation and it is so little work for you. And with Scandal-less ice cream I can tell you I will be enjoying a few more scoops of ice cream this summer to help cool off.
I shopped at Safeway, but you can also find these Open Nature products at the Albertsons Companies family of stores, including Albertsons, Safeway, ACME Markets, Jewel-Osco, Vons, Randalls, Shaw’s Supermarket, Star Market, and Tom Thumb OR ONLINE.
