How To Make Homemade Tortilla Chips

  • Slice Tortillas. Cut your tortillas into wedges. How big you want is entirely up to you. I did 8 wedges for smaller chips, but you can do 4, 6, 8 etc.
  • Heat Oil. Preheat oil in a large skillet. If you are frying your chips, fill a large skillet or stock pot with enough oil to coat the pan and for the tortillas to float. Heat to about 350º F.
  • Cook. After the oil is hot, add your tortilla pieces to the pan, being careful not to over fill the pan. Let them cook for about 5 minutes per side, until they are a light golden brown.
  • Remove. After the chips are cooked, remove to a paper towel lined tray or a wire rack over a baking tray to cool. Immediately sprinkle with salt.

How To Bake Homemade Tortilla Chips

  • Just as with the fried tortilla chips, you will slice into your desired sizes.
  • Arrange the tortilla pieces on a lined baking sheet and brush each or spray with just a little bit of oil. Season with salt.
  • Bake for about 10 minutes per side until golden brown.
  • Remove and transfer to a paper towel lined baking sheet to cool.

Recipe Tips & Tricks

  • How long the chips take to cook will depend on how thick your tortillas are. You really want to go based on color, not time. Thicker tortillas will definitely take longer, and you want to give them that time or you will have a chewy instead of crunchy chip.
  • Drain the chips. If you are frying, and even baking you want to have the chips cool on either a paper towel lined baking sheet or a wire rack that is placed over a baking tray. You want any grease that is on the chips to drain away, so you get perfectly crispy chips.
  • Season right away. As soon as you take your chips out of the hot oil, you want to add your seasonings, so that they stick. This is also why you season as soon as you brush with oil before baking in the oven.
  • Cook in batches. Whether you are frying or baking your chips, you will want to cook in batches. If you over crowd your oil, the temperature drops, and the chips will absorb the oil and be greasy.

Can I Make Tortilla Chips In The Air Fryer

Yes you can! I find they don’t cook quite as evenly, because they tend to fly around in the air fryer some. But they definitely get crispy and work. Spray or brush tortilla pieces with oil and season with salt. Place in air fryer at 360º F. Cook for 2-3 minutes, flip and cook for about 2 more minutes. Check for doneness and cook longer if they aren’t quite golden brown yet.

What To Serve With Homemade Tortilla Chips

Tortilla chips go with literally anything in my mind, but here are a few great uses for them if you want more than just plain chips!

How To Store Tortilla Chips

Just like the store bought ones, you will want to place in an airtight container or bag. They will last in the pantry for up to 3 days.

These are ideal for a homemade snack! I don't have a countertop air fryer, but an oven air fryer and I'll be trying these soon. I love the make-at-home goodness!
