Sour Cream Cookies – soft and fluffy old fashioned sour cream sugar cookies topped with a vanilla glaze. Great for the holidays or anytime, just decorate with your favorite sprinkles.
Do you remember those old school classic sugar cookies that your Grandma used to make? They are light and fluffy, super moist, thick and is stopped with a vanilla glaze and lots of sprinkles? This is exactly what those are!
They are a must at our Christmas cookie exchange every year, and always one of the first cookies to disappear. Any don’t worry if you have never had them, you will NEVER in a million years guess there is sour cream in them, it just makes them moist and delicious.

My family loves Frosted Sugar Cookies. They are a must for the holidays, but they are really requested all year round. Anytime frosting is involved, my family is happy.
I will say when my son found out the name of that these were called Sour Cream Cookies, he kind of back tracked and was so skeptical of eating them. But trust me, even if you don’t like sour cream (he doesn’t), you will never know. If you just called them old fashioned sugar cookies, you wouldn’t have any hesitation.

What You’ll Need
- Butter
- Sour Cream
- Granulated Sugar
- Egg
- Vanilla Extract
- All-Purpose Flour
- Baking Powder
- Baking Soda
- Salt
- Powdered Sugar
- Milk
- Sprinkles
When I was growing up these were always topped with non-pariel sprinkles (the little balls), but you really can use any sprinkle, colored sugar, or anything in any color you like.

How To Make Sour Cream Cookies
- Using an electric stand mixer cream the butter and sugar together until it is super light and fluffy, this can take 2-3 minutes to get it to really come together.
- Add the egg and vanilla and beat until they are fully incorporated.
- Stir in the sour cream until the mixture is smooth and combined.
- Mix in all of the dry ingredients and mix until it just comes together. It will be a sticky dough.
- Place in the fridge for at least an hour chill so the cookies hold their shape when you bake them.
- Scoop balls of dough onto a baking sheet and bake for 11 minutes. You want the edges to be set and the tops to be just dry and set. Do not let the cookies get golden brown or they will be over cooked.
- Remove from the oven and let cool for 10 minutes before removing to a wire rack to cool completely.

Cookie Glaze
The glaze is super easy to make by just mixing all of the ingredients together in a bowl until you get a smooth and drizzle-able consistency. You want it thicker than a frosting, but not super thin you could just pour it over the cookies either.
Using a spoon spread the glaze over the completely cooled cookies and decorate with your sprinkles.
Storage
Store your cookies in an airtight container for 4-5 days for them to remain soft and tender. I like to place a layer of wax or parchment paper between them, so the glaze doesn’t cause the cookies to stick together.
Freezing – you can most definitely freeze sour cream cookies. Place in an airtight container, with wax or parchment paper between the cookies for 3-4 months.

Recipe Tips
- Room temperature ingredients. When you are baking you really want to start with room temperature ingredients. This ensures they blend and mix well with each other and you get the best product. You can remove the egg and sour cream from the fridge 1 hour before starting and you can even let the butter sit out overnight if you know you are baking the next day.
- Do not over bake. This is the most common mistake when baking. People wait for the cookies or bars to be fully cooked while they are in the oven. Then they take them out and let them cool on the hot pan. The pan is super hot, and so is the inside of the cookie, so they continue to cook during this time. So you want to take your baked goods out of the oven when they are barely done. The edges are set and golden, and the tops of the cookies are dry. If they are golden brown then they will be over done.
- Get creative with your decorating. You can use whatever color and type of sprinkles that you like. You can even color your glaze. Use whatever food coloring you have and mix it with the glaze. Then you could have pink cookies for Valentine’s Day or orange cookies for Halloween.
- Make sure the cookies are completely cook before adding the glaze. Otherwise the glaze will just melt into the cookies and create a soggy and messy cookie.
