Thousand Island Dressing – a quick and easy homemade dressing. Creamy, sweet, tangy and so much better than the store bought version in just minutes!

Making dressings at home is super easy, and they are so much better than store bought! Not only can you control the quality of ingredients, but you can reduce the sugar, the salt, change the spices etc.

My family is a huge thousand island dressing fan. It is what my guys pick almost 99% of the time. And if we have homemade in the fridge, they will be asking for salads all week until it is gone .

What This Recipe Works

  • This uses just a handful of ingredients, and they are ones you probably already have in your fridge. Nothing out of the ordinary here!
  • You control the ingredients. You want to cut back on the salt or high fructose corn syrup or other added sugars, use ingredients that you like. Use organic, or natural or no salt versions. Use vegan may so you can have a vegan version of this dressing.
  • This will last in the fridge for about 2 weeks, so you can make it once and it will last for side salads, dinner salads, or if you have Corned Beef and want to make a mock Reuben sandwich.

What Is Thousand Island Dressing

I used to always wonder how it got its name. Well it was first made in an area called Thousand Islands. It borders New York and Canada and is a stunningly beautiful area, with almost two thousand islands that make up this region.

Versions of this dressing can be found as the “special sauce” on so many burgers across the country. My Big Mac Salad has a very similar version of this for the dressing, with thousand island as an alternative.

Is Russian Dressing Just Thousand Island

The two dressings are very similar, but a Russian dressing uses horseradish and chili pepper to add some spice to the dressing. Traditionally a Rueben sandwich uses Russian dressing, but when people make them at home, they will often use Thousand Island, since it is easier to come by.

Storage

I like to store homemade dressings in a mason jar with a tight fitting lid. This will last in the fridge for 10-12 days.

What To Serve With Thousand Island Dressing

Aside from using it on your favorite Tossed Salad there are lots of great ways to use it!
