Cinnamon Scones

Cinnamon Scones – moist, buttery, and tender scones that are loaded with cinnamon flavor and topped with a sweet vanilla glaze. It is like a cinnamon roll in scone form!

One of my favorite breakfasts for special occasions is Cinnamon Rolls. There is just something about the combination of butter, brown sugar and cinnamon together that make them so good! So why not give that same flavor to scones, which since making these Chocolate Chip Scones have become a huge favorite.

If you make scones right they are super tender, moist, and delicious. Not like the dry and tough ones you find at a lot of bakeries or coffee shops. And then these are topped with an icing that just makes them extra special!

What Is The Secret To A Good Scone

There are a couple things that really make for a good scone.

  • Cold Butter – you want to make sure your butter is super cold. I like to use a box grater and grate the butter into the flour. Then put it back in the fridge to keep it cold. After you shape the scones and cut them, I put them back into the fridge again while the oven preheats. Some people even freeze them for a little bit to make sure the butter is super cold.
  • Do Not Over Work The Dough – this is a huge key! When you are preparing the dough, mix until things are just combined. Same when you are making my Easy Biscuit Recipe, the less you work the dough the more they will rise, the more tender and flaky they will be.

How To Make Cinnamon Scones

  1. In a large bowl mix together the flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon and salt until it is well blended.
  2. Use a box grater to grate your butter. You can put this in the freezer for a few minutes after it is grated to get it nice and cold again.
  3. Add butter to the flour mixture and use a pastry cutter to cut in the butter and have the mixture come together with pea-sized crumbs. Place in the fridge while you measure the next ingredients.
  4. In a separate bowl whisk together heavy cream, brown sugar, egg and vanilla until nice and smooth.
  5. Pour the heavy cream mixture into the flour mixture and gently mix until everything appears to be blended and moist.
  6. Turn batter onto a lightly floured surface and use your hands to work the dough into a ball. If it is too sticky add a tiny bit more flour. If it is very dry, add a tablespoon more of heavy cream. Press the ball into an 8-inch disk that is about 1 inch thick.
  7. Use a sharp knife to cut the disk into 8 wedges.
  8. Place the wedges onto a lined baking sheet and brush with the remaining heavy cream.
  9. In a small bowl mix together brown sugar and cinnamon for the topping Sprinkle over each scone. Put the baking sheet in the fridge for 15 minutes while you preheat the oven.
  10. Bake scones for 20-22 minutes until the edges and top are lightly golden brown. Remove from the oven and let them cool for at least a few minutes.
  11. To prepare the icing mix together the ingredients until it is smooth and drizzle-able. Drizzle over slightly cooled scones to serve.

How To Store Scones

Scones are really best served the day they are made. You can store them in an air tight container for up to 2 days at room temperature.

Can You Freeze Scones

Yep! You absolutely can and they work really well that way.
You can freeze the scones before you bake them. After you cut them, arrange on a baking sheet and freeze. Once they are completely frozen, you can put them in a food storage bag and freeze for a month. When you are ready to bake remove them from the freezer and let them thaw on the counter for 1-2 hours. Then brush with cream and bake. You may need to add a couple minutes to the baking time.
You can freeze already baked scones. Place the baked scones on a baking sheet and freeze. Once they are completely frozen you can put them in a food storage bag and freezer for a month. When you want to eat them, remove and let thaw on the counter before serving.

Recipe Variations

If you have Cinnamon Chips you can mix 1 cup of them when you add the heavy cream mixture. They are a great way to give even more cinnamon flavor.

Mix up the Icing! You can either add a pinch of cinnamon and/or make a Coffee Icing by using a little bit of leftover coffee in place of the milk. I mean, what goes better with a cinnamon roll than a cup of coffee!

Scones are such a great weekend brunch idea or even just to have as a snack with a cup of coffee. If you like cinnamon, these are a must try! And trust me, scones are just easier to make than you think. And they will be better than any coffee shop one you have tried before.
