Cheesy Skillet Gnocchi is a one pan, quick and easy dinner. A healthified version of pure comfort food.
Gnocchi has to be one of the most under used foods, that I absolutely love! Good gnocchi are so soft, pillowy, and are good in so many different dishes. Chicken Gnocchi Soup is one of my favorites to make all winter long.
You can find it with the rest of the dried pasta at the grocery store, so it is great to have on hand and use when nights get crazy.
I found this cheesy gnocchi skillet years ago in a Cooking Light magazine, and it has been a staple in our house since. It is great to make in the summer when you have fresh tomatoes. Or you can make it in the winter with canned tomatoes and it is still comforting and delicious.
What You’ll Need
- Gnocchi
- Italian Sausage
- Olive Oil
- Garlic
- Tomatoes (fresh or canned diced tomatoes)
- Italian Seasoning
- Heavy Cream
- Mozzarella Cheese
- Salt & Pepper
How To Make Cheesy Gnocchi Skillet
- This starts a little different, you don’t boil the gnocchi. Heat a large skillet over medium high heat. Add the olive oil and gnocchi. Cook for about 7 minutes, until the gnocchi start to lightly brown and soften. Remove them from the pan.
- Add the sausage to the pan, break it apart and cook for 5-6 minutes, until it is cooked. Remove the sausage from the pan and keep warm.
- Stir in the tomatoes, Italian seasoning, salt and pepper and cook for 7-8 minutes until the tomatoes start to soften and bread down.
- Add the sausage and gnocchi back to the pan and stir in the heavy cream. Cook for a few minutes, until it is warm.
- Top with cheese and cover to melt.
Can I Use Something Other Than Heavy Cream
Absolutely. If you don’t want to or don’t have it, you can use any other milk product/substitute you like. There is only 1/4 cup for the whole recipe, so it isn’t a lot. But you can use whatever you want it its place.
The other nice this about this recipe is you can use whatever type of sausage you like. If you want to cut down on the fat you can use turkey or chicken Italian sausage. Whatever you have and like works great.

I’m right there with you on needing some structure back in my life. My husband had the week off so there was a lot of sitting and eating bad junk food. This looks like a great dinner to get back on track with!
Seriously, this looks like perfection in a skillet. I am wanting this so bad right now. We are having soup for dinner tonight, but I am so making this tomorrow.

Do you need to boil the gnocchi first before pan frying?
No, they cook in the frying pan Cyndi. They only need a couple minutes until they are rehydrated and cooked.
