Rice Krispie treats are definitely a family favorite here. My husband isn’t a fan of chocolate, but krispie treats are one of his all time favorites. So we make them a lot! For summer get togethers, it is such a great go thing to make. And when you can turn them into watermelon slices, it just makes them more fun!

Yes, it is a couple of extra steps, but it really is the same as making the classic version. And people will be very impressed and asking you how you did it!

What You’ll Need

How To Make Watermelon Rice Krispie Treats

  • Spray a 9-inch cake pan or 9-inch spring form pan with non-stick spray.
  • In a microwave safe bowl add marshmallows and butter for the green part of the watermelon. Heat for 45 seconds on high. Remove from the oven, add the green food coloring and mix until smooth and melted. Add in the rice krispie cereal and mix until evenly blended and a nice green color.
  • Add the green krispies to the pan, and press around the edges. It will be 1-1 1/2 inches thick around the edge to make the “rind” of the watermelon. Set aside while you made the center.
  • In a microwave safe bowl add the marshmallows and butter for the red part of the watermelon. Heat for 1 minute on high. Remove from the microwave and add the red food color. Mix until smooth and a bright red color. Add in the rice krispie cereal and mix until evenly blended.
  • Pour the red krispies into the center of the cake pan and press into an even layer.
  • Sprinkle mini chocolate chips over the top and gently press down for the “seeds” to stick.

Recipe Tips & Suggestions

  • Spray your hands with non-stick spray or get them wet and shake off all of the excess water. Then you can press your krispie treats into the pan and get them exactly how you want.
  • Mini chocolate chips work best for the size to look like “seeds”, but regular chocolate chips work just fine as well.
  • Want your krispie treat to actually taste like watermelon? Try adding Watermelon Flavoring that you can get on Amazon.
  • I used Betty Crocker Gel Food Coloring that you can get at any grocery store.

Storage

Just like any krispie treats, you want to store these in an airtight container for up to 3-4 days. They do not freeze well, so it isn’t something that you really want to make much ahead of time.
