Getting dinner on the table every night can be a struggle. Sometimes you don’t have time, sometimes nothing sounds good, and then you add in a whole family that has different tastes and it can be tough. This Orange Chicken is going to make life easy, and everyone happy!

You know that Orange Chicken you get at Chinese take-out that is sickly sweet, but everyone still seems to like it? Well this is so much better! You get real orange flavor, a little bit of sweetness, but trust me, it isn’t much. And then you get depth from the spices. It will totally make you re-think what orange chicken should be like!

  • Chicken Breasts
  • Olive Oil

  • Orange Juice
  • Apple Cider Vinegar
  • Brown Sugar – I used Imperial Sugar for this recipe

  • Cumin

You can use fresh squeezed orange juice or bottled juice, either works great. I like to use fresh squeezed oranges, so I can add a few orange slices to the skillet as it bakes.

Orange Glaze

The glaze is what gives this chicken all the flavor and is what takes it over the top! This isn’t your classic Chinese orange chicken you get at a take out restaurant. This is tangy from the orange juice, sweet from the sugar and honey, and savory from the spices.

The glaze takes a little bit of time to thicken and cook down. You can easily do this step ahead of time and store the glaze in the fridge until you are ready to make dinner, or you can do it all at once, whatever works for you.

How To Make Orange Glazed Chicken

  1. To make the glaze mix together orange juice, vinegar, brown sugar, honey, chili powder, paprika and cumin in a small saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil and simmer for about 25 minutes until the mixture starts to thicken.
  2. Season chicken with salt and pepper.
  3. Heat a large skillet over high heat and add oil. Once it is hot search chicken breasts for 3-4 minutes on the first side until it browned.
  4. Pour glaze over the chicken and place in the oven for about 20 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through.

What To Serve With Orange Glazed Chicken

The thing I like most about this orange chicken is that is doesn’t scream Asian food. Most of the time you see soy sauce and ginger in any orange glaze that goes on chicken. But it doesn’t to be just one sided. This has so much more depth of flavor and is still simple with every day ingredients.

What Chicken To Use

You really can use any chicken here, I like to use boneless chicken breasts, but you can easily use chicken thighs or even drumsticks. If you use drumsticks, the time in the oven will be longer. Make sure you cook to an internal temperature of 165º F to be sure any chicken is safe to eat.
