French Onion Chicken Bake – an easy chicken recipe that is stuffed with caramelized onions and cheese. An easy, flavorful, comforting meal you can get on the table quickly!
Caramelized onions are one of my all time favorite things. I will take them on a burger, in soup, with this chicken or just about any other form. There is just something comforting about French Onion Soup and those flavors can be used in so many different and tasty ways.
French Onion Mac and Cheese for example. Two worlds collide for one epic comfort food dish.
This French Onion Chicken Bake is such a great dinner that is good any night of the week. But it is delicious and impressive enough you can serve it to guests as well. It all starts out with a chicken breast that you cut in half, and then stuff with caramelized onions and cheese!
The chicken bakes in a mixture of broth and more caramelized onions, so you get this delicious sauce that you can pour over the chicken when you serve it. It is great with pasta, potatoes, or crusty bread so you don’t miss any of those juices!
What’s In French Onion Chicken
- Chicken
- Dried Thyme
- Garlic

How To Make French Onion Chicken
- Start by horizontally cutting each chicken breast in half, but not all the way through. You want to be able to unfold it, stuff it with the filling and then wrap it around the filling to bake.
- Season each piece of chicken with salt, pepper, dried thyme and a little bit of garlic.
- Heat a large skillet over medium high heat and ad the butter to melt.
- Season the sliced onions with salt, pepper and dried thyme.
- Add the onions to the pan can cook for 5-8 minutes, until they are nice and tender.
- Reduce the heat to medium and add the garlic. Stir and cook for about 15 minutes. You want to stir them occasionally, so they don’t get too browned.
- Pour in the chicken broth, wine, and Worcestershire sauce. Keep stirring and cooking until the onions are browned and the sauce has thickened.
- Add 2 tablespoons of caramelized onion and ¼ cup mozzarella in each chicken pocket. Seal with toothpicks.
- In the bottom of a 13×9 inch baking dish mix together the rest of the chicken broth and the remaining onions. Set aside.
- In the same skillet you cooked the onions in, heat the oil on medium high heat until it is nice and hot. Sear chicken breast on each side until browned. It will take about 4 minutes for each side.
- Place the seared chicken over the onion mixture in the baking dish and bake for 15-20 minutes, until the chicken is cooked through.
- To serve remove the toothpicks, and scoop out the onions and sauce from the baking dish.
What To Serve With French Onion Chicken
Recipe Tips
- If you are looking to mix things up this recipe is great to make with flank steak instead of chicken!
- You want to use a dry white wine for this recipe. Pinot Gris or Sauvignon Blanc are my favorite. If you don’t want o use wine, just use more chicken broth.
- Mix up the cheese! The recipe calls for Mozzarella cheese, but you can use Cheddar, Swiss, or Gruyere are great options.
- Want to make this ahead? Follow the recipe until you are ready to put it in the oven. Then just cover and put in the fridge. Once you rea ready to bake, just add 5 minutes to the cooking time and you have dinner on a weeknight in minutes!
Storage
If you have leftovers, let the chicken cool and then put in an air tight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.
You can freeze leftover chicken as well. It is best to wrap each piece of chicken in plastic wrap and then place in an airtight container. It will be good in the freezer for about a month.
Let the chicken thaw in the fridge and then warm leftovers in the oven or microwave to heat it through.
