Apple Pie Bread – Tender and moist apple bread with thick cinnamon streusel topping. Perfect fall treat!

Apple baking in the fall is the best thing!  There is just something about fall desserts. I don’t know if it is the cinnamon and other spices or what, but they get me every time!  Apple Spice Cupcakes are a perfect example, and that brown sugar frosting is just amazing.

The flavor of apple pie is perfect for just about anything.  It is great in these Apple Pie Bars and today we are turning it into bread!

This Apple Pie Bread recipe has been on the blog for almost a decade! It originally had chocolate chips in the topping. But over the years I have played with the recipe and end up leaving them out. If you liked the original, don’t worry I added notes in the recipe card for you.

Apple Pie Bread is super simple to make.  It is full of of diced apples, so you get actual pieces in each bite. Lots of people like to add nuts, to the bread or in the topping, they make a great addition.

How To Make Apple Pie Bread

  • Mix Wet – start by creaming together the butter with both sugars. Then you mix in the buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla until well combined.
  • Add Dry – Slowly add in the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt until the batter just starts to come together.
  • Apples – toss the apples with a little bit of the flour, this helps to make sure they don’t sink to the bottom. Fold them into the batter until just combined.
  • Streusel – use your hands to mix together the streusel ingredients together until it is the texture of coarse sand.
  • Bake – spread the batter into a loaf pan and sprinkle the streusel topping evenly over the top. Bake for about an hour, until a tester comes out clean.
  • Cool – remove from the oven and let cool completely before slicing.

Recipe Tips & Tricks

  • The trick to getting the apples throughout the bread and not have them just sink to the bottom is to toss them with a little flour before adding to the batter.  Then you fold them in and they should spread evenly throughout the bread.
  • If you don’t have buttermilk, don’t worry! Fill a liquid measuring cup with 1/3 cup of milk and then add with 1 teaspoon of white vinegar. Let it stand for about 5 minutes and then use in the recipe.
  • Nuts are a great addition to the bread and the topping. You can use 3/4 cup chopped pecans or walnuts in the topping and/or mix in with the apples.
  • You can use any type of apple that you like, 2 cups will be about 1 1/2 medium sized apples. Just make sure to peel them or the bread will have a strange texture.

Storage

This is a great bread that you can make ahead and have in the freezer or just make the day before you need it. You can just cover and keep for up to 4 days.

Freezing – I like to slice the bread and arrange the slices on a baking sheet. Place in the freezer for a couple of hours until frozen. Then place in a freezer safe container and freeze for up to 3 months. This way you can just take out a slice at a time if desired.
