Tortilla Crusted Tilapia – Mild white fish coated in a Mexican inspired tortilla crust. Baked until crispy and perfectly flakey!
Years ago my mom told me about this tortilla crusted fish that she found in the frozen section at Costco. I tried it and it was good, but I thought it would be so much better to spruce up and add more flavor to at home.
And oh my is it full of flavor, you can make it spicy and it is anything but boring!
I like to use tilapia when I made this recipe, but you really could use any mild white fish. Tilapia is just easy to find and is relatively inexpensive at the store. Plus it is super mild and will take on the flavor of whatever you season it with.
And we all know I am a huge fan of Mexican Recipes, so it should come as no surprise that it is coated in a taco spiced crunchy tortilla chip coating.
How To Make Tortilla Crusted Tilapia
- Start by setting up a quick and easy breading station. You want one bowl for the crushed tortilla chips and the spices. A second bowl for the egg white and water that will coat the fish. And a third bowl of flour.
- Take a piece of fish and gently dredge it in the flour. You want to make sure it is well coated and then gently shake off the excess.
- After the flour place it in the egg white and get it evenly coated. Then press into the tortilla crumb until everything is well covered.
- Place on a baking sheet and bake for about 12 minutes. It will depend on how thick your piece of fish is.
- Remove from the oven and serve with lime wedges.
What Fish To Use
Tilapia is super mild and works really well in this recipe. But you could also use:
- Cod
- Halibut
- Flounder
- Haddock
I served this fish with Roasted Edamame and Oven Roasted Potatoes in the pictures.

I think my family would really like this chicken recipe, anything with tortilla chips is a win, win!
Oops… NOT chicken… fish, as soon as I hit send I realized I typed the wrong thing sorry ๐
I’m a recent convert to fish, too and tilapia is one of my new favorites. I love the idea of using tortilla chips as the breading. It looks delicious.
The tortilla crust is such a great idea. Love the crunchy texture. My kids will luckily eat any fish and this is going to be my next recipe. A great fish night recipe, Erin:)
With scrumptious-looking meals like this, you’ll be a fish fanatic in no time! ๐
Fish stinks! ๐ Unless it’s salmon. Or it’s in bread crumbs. Like this! You know I’m like a little kid when it comes to my food and I have to say – unbreaded fish is nasty.
There! I said it. I know y’all were thinking the same. ๐
I am TRYING to like unbreaded fish. I made some the other night, but it had crazy amounts of sauce on it, so that barely counts ๐
What a brilliant idea! I am going to try this at home – can’t wait!
Hope you like it, even me, the non-fish eater enjoyed it!
We like white fish – but cannot make myself buy or order tilapia, due to the way it is raised. I wonder what the next best fish would be for this recipe?
There is a list of other great fish to use in the post above
Yum! I bet the crunchy tortilla chips have a nice contrast to the flaky tilapia.
This looks so delicious and yummy! My daughter and I are going to love this recipe! Can’t wait to give this a try!
