Watermelon Soda – Turn juicy watermelon into a refreshing watermelon soda with a twist of lime!  Great to beat the heat this summer!

Once summer hits I want all the cold and refreshing drinks I can get my hands on. I mean, after some time outside, i am all for a cold glass of water. But I really like to switch it up no and then.

And using fresh, juicy watermelon makes for the most refreshing, sweet, and fruity drink!

What You’ll Need

Be sure to scroll to the bottom of the post for the FULL PRINTABLE recipe card.

  • Fresh Watermelon – seedless is best for this recipe
  • Lime Juice
  • Water
  • Sugar
  • Sparkling Water – I used sparkling lime flavored water

This really is just a few simple ingredients to make a homemade soda that you will come back to over and over again. And you really can play with the recipe. I use lime sparkling water, but you can use plain, berry, or another fruit combination and it will be delicious!

How To Make Watermelon Soda

The blender does almost all of the work, so it is ready in no time! Aside from actually chopping the watermelon, but if you buy the already peeled stuff, you can be enjoying a glass in 5 minutes.

  1. Add the diced watermelon, lime juice, water, and sugar to the food processor or blender and blend until it is completely smooth.
  2. Pour the mixture through a strainer to get rid of the pulp and any chunks,
  3. In a large pitcher combine the sparkling water with the watermelon juice and mix until combined.
  4. To serve pour over glasses filled with ice.

Can You Make Ahead

Yes, if you want to make this ahead, stop when it comes to adding the sparkling water. Just make the watermelon juice portion and store in the fridge until you are ready to serve. You can even just mix about equal parts watermelon with the sparkling water to make individual glasses if you don’t want a whole pitcher.

This homemade soda is so easy to make and will definitely rethink letting your kids (or yourself) have soda in your life. It is full of fresh fruit and delicious. Skip all the chemicals and junk in the canned stuff from the store and make your own watermelon soda on repeat all summer long!

Do I have to add the sugar?

No, if you want yours less sweet and a little tart you can absolutely skip it! If you want it to taste more like the store bought kind, you will want to add it. It will also depend on your watermelon, some are definitely more sweet than others.

What kind of sparkling water do you use?

You really can use anything fizzy for this step. I used lime flavored sparkling water to give it more flavor, but you could use the unflavored kind, club soda, or really and flavor that pairs with watermelon and lime.

How do I store the leftovers?

Because of the carbonation this isn’t a drink that will store well. If you don’t think you will drink it all at one time, you could add the sparkling water to the top of each glass. Then store leftovers in the fridge for a couple days, adding fresh sparkling water each time.

Can I add alcohol?

Absolutely! If you want to make this a grown up cocktail you definitely can. Vodka or Rum would be great additions.

You can use less sugar if your watermelon is super sweet. But the tartness of the lime does need some extra sugar to balance out the drink.
