Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins – healthier banana muffins made with whole wheat flour and honey. Tender, moist, and actually pretty good for you!
You might find it hard to believe that these chocolatey banana muffins are healthy, but hear me out! First, mashed bananas and honey provide natural sweetening without refined sugars.
On top of that, they’re made with whole wheat flour, so you get healthy whole grains with breakfast.
Cocoa powder adds a smooth chocolate flavor to these muffins without the extra sugar. And mini chocolate chips mean you’ll use less of them but still get some in each bite! Why This Recipe Works
- They’re easy to make, and can be in and out of the oven in under 30 minutes!
- They are better for you and keep you full until lunchtime.
- Delicious and full of flavor, but not overly sweet!
- High in fiber from bananas and whole grains.
What You’ll Need
- Bananas – Mashed banana adds flavor, sweetness, and fiber.
- Mini chocolate chips – Tiny chocolate chips make these healthy muffins taste more indulgent.
- White whole wheat flour – A whole grain flour that won’t weigh down your muffins like regular whole wheat.
- Cocoa powder – Adds color and rich chocolate flavor.
- Honey – Provides natural sweetening with its delicate taste.
- Vanilla – Adds a sweet, warm aroma that everyone loves.
- Egg – Binds the ingredients together and adds moisture and richness.
- Canola oil – This oil adds richness and moisture.
- Baking powder – Helps make the muffins nice and fluffy.
- Baking soda – Reacts with honey to help the muffins rise.
- Salt – Balances out the sweetness in the recipe.
How To Make Banana Chocolate Chip muffins
- Prepare your pan – Line a 12-cup muffin tin with paper liners or spray each cup well.
- Mix the wet ingredients – In a large bowl, mix together the banana, honey, egg, oil, and vanilla until smooth.
- Mix in the dry ingredients – Mix in the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt until just combined.
- Add the chocolate – Fold in the chocolate chips until evenly distributed.
- Scoop – Fill each muffin tin about ⅔ full with batter.
- Bake – 15-18 minutes in a 350°F oven until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Cool – Remove from the oven and let muffins cool for 5 minutes in the pan. Then remove them to a wire rack to cool completely.
Recipe Tips
- For the best flavor, use ripe bananas that have some brown speckles on them. The darker they are, the sweeter they’ll taste.
- To make these gluten-free, substitute the whole wheat flour with a gluten-free 1:1 baking blend. Be sure to mix the batter very well to fully hydrate the flours.
- To make this recipe egg-free, omit the egg. Replace it with 1 Tbsp. ground flaxseed mixed with 3 Tbsp. of water. Whisk together and let the mixture sit for 5 minutes before using it in place of the egg in the recipe.
Store the finished muffins in an airtight container at room temperature. For the best results, wait until they’re completely cool to store. Avoid storing them in the refrigerator, as it will dry them out.
To freeze, place cooled muffins on a baking sheet in the freezer for 30 minutes to an hour. Next, transfer them to a freezer-safe zip bag. Do your best to remove extra air to prevent freezer burn.
