I’ve always been a fan of chocolate desserts, especially this time of year when peppermint pairs so perfectly with rich chocolate flavors. If you’re like me and can’t get enough of this combo, you might also love my Peppermint Hot Chocolate for cozy nights or a Chocolate Peppermint Cheesecake for showstopping holiday desserts.

But these cookies? They’re perfect for gifting, sharing, or keeping all to yourself (no judgment here).

They’re easy to whip up and have that soft, melt-in-your-mouth texture that keeps you reaching for just one more. The crushed peppermint candies on top add the perfect crunch and a little extra holiday flair.

How To Make Chocolate Peppermint Cookies

  1. Prepare the dry ingredients – Whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt in a bowl, then set aside.
  2. Melt the chocolate – Melt a portion of the dark chocolate chips and let them cool slightly while you prepare the other ingredients.
  3. Cream the butter and sugar – Beat the butter until creamy, then mix in the granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and peppermint extract until smooth. Add the eggs and mix thoroughly.
  4. Combine the wet and dry ingredients – Stir in the melted chocolate, then slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, blending until just combined. Fold in the remaining chocolate chips.
  5. Scoop and bake the cookies – Roll the dough into 1-inch balls and arrange on a baking sheet. Bake at 375°F for 9–10 minutes, then let cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
  6. Mix the glaze – While the cookies cool, combine powdered sugar, peppermint extract, and milk to make a drizzleable glaze, adjusting the consistency as needed.
  7. Decorate the cookies – Drizzle the cooled cookies with the peppermint glaze and sprinkle with crushed peppermint candies before letting them set.
  8. Store and enjoy – Allow the glaze to harden fully, then store the cookies in an airtight container or serve immediately.

Recipe Tips & Tricks

  • Use high-quality chocolate – Choose good dark chocolate chips or bars for melting; it enhances the richness and flavor of the cookies.
  • Don’t skip cooling the melted chocolate – Let the melted chocolate cool slightly before adding it to the batter to avoid melting the butter or scrambling the eggs.
  • Cool cookies completely before glazing – If the cookies are even slightly warm, the glaze will melt and lose its decorative drizzle effect.
  • Adjust peppermint flavor to taste – If you love a stronger peppermint flavor, add an extra 1/4 teaspoon of peppermint extract to the cookie dough or glaze.
  • Customize the toppings – Instead of crushed candy canes, try holiday sprinkles, mini chocolate chips, or even a light dusting of cocoa powder.
  • Make them ahead – The dough can be prepared and refrigerated for up to 24 hours before baking, making it easy to prep in advance for holiday gatherings.

  • 1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup peppermint candies, crushed

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375°F degrees.
  • In a bowl whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  • Melt 1 1/4 cups dark chocolate chips.
  • In an electric mixer, beat butter until creamy. Mix in sugar, vanilla, and peppermint extract. Mix until smooth. Beat in eggs.
  • Add melted chocolate and mix until well combined. Pour in dry ingredients and mix until well-blended. Fold in remaining chocolate chips.
  • Scoop 1-inch balls of dough onto a baking sheet, spaced about 2-inches apart. Bake for 9-10 minutes until edges are set. Remove from oven and let cool on baking sheet for five minutes before removing to a wire rack to cool completely.

After cookies have cooled completely, drizzle glaze over top of cookies. Immediately sprinkle with crushed peppermint candies. Allow chocolate to set before storing in an airtight container.
