Skinny Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins – a lightened up (but you would never know it) banana muffin with chocolate chips. They freeze well, so you can always have them on hand for quick breakfasts.

I’m always looking for ways to rescue those overripe bananas languishing on the counter. I’ll pop them into Banana Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies, Chocolate Chip Banana Pancakes, or Peanut Butter Banana Bread. But I must admit, these Skinny Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins might be the ultimate savior for those mushy yet sweet golden treasures. Turn imperfection into perfection.

Crafted with Greek yogurt and agave (or honey) instead of sugar and boasting 100% whole wheat goodness from white whole wheat flour, these muffins are tender, moist, and just a tad better for you. I love having a stash in the freezer to make mornings a breeze with a quick, satisfying breakfast that ensures no banana goes to waste!

  • Quick Prep Time – Experience convenience with a short prep time. This recipe lets you whip up a batch of Skinny Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins in just 5 minutes, making it ideal for busy mornings.
  • Versatile Swaps – Customize the sweetness of these muffins with honey, agave, or maple syrup. This flexibility ensures the recipe suits your taste and dietary preferences.
  • Simple Steps – These muffins are as straightforward as you can get. The result is a quick, easy, and satisfying batch that anyone can master.

What You’ll Need

Be sure to scroll to the bottom of the post for the FULL PRINTABLE recipe card.

  • Bananas
  • Greek Yogurt – Plain, unsweetened Greek yogurt is the healthiest option for adding moisture and tanginess to the muffins. However, regular yogurt or sour cream would work in a pinch.
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Egg
  • Honey – I always have honey on hand, so this is my go-to sweetener. Depending on your preferences, you can substitute agave, maple syrup, or molasses. Ingredients like maple syrup or molasses will add a rich, robust flavor to the muffin, but they’ll be just as delicious.
  • Light Brown Sugar
  • White Whole Wheat Flour – White whole wheat flour provides the best of both worlds—it’s a healthier alternative to traditional all-purpose flour and maintains a mild flavor and light texture. You can still use other flours in the recipe, though. Whole wheat flour will provide a nuttier flavor and added nutrition, while all-purpose flour yields the lightest texture.
  • Baking Powder
  • Baking Soda
  • Salt
  • Mini Chocolate Chips

How To Make Skinny Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins

  • Preheat and Prep. Begin by preheating the oven to 350º F. Prepare a 12-cup muffin pan with liners or non-stick spray. This ensures your muffins won’t stick during baking.
  • Blend the Wet Ingredients. Add the bananas to a large bowl and mash them with a fork. Then, add Greek yogurt, egg, honey, and light brown sugar and mix until well combined.
  • Mix Dry Ingredients. Whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and mini chocolate chips in a separate bowl.
  • Combine. Gently fold the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until just combined. Don’t overmix, or the muffins will become dense.
  • Fill Muffin Cups. Portion the batter into each muffin cup. Fill each one about ¾ full.
  • Bake to Perfection. Bake for 14-16 minutes. Keep an eye on them – you’ll know they’re ready when a tester comes out clean.
  • Cool and Savor. Once baked to golden perfection, allow the muffins to cool in the pan for 5 minutes. Then, transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Recipe Tips & Tricks

  • Leverage the Sweetness: The riper the bananas, the sweeter your Skinny Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins will be. Overripe bananas add a natural sweetness, enhancing the flavor of your muffins.
  • Explore Yogurt Options: Experiment with different types of yogurt, such as flavored or non-dairy alternatives. Each variation brings a unique twist to the texture and taste of your muffins.
  • Go Beyond Mini Chips: Expand your chocolate chip horizons by trying different sizes or experimenting with chopped chocolate. This minor tweak can transform the chocolatey goodness in each bite.
  • Adjust Filling Heights: For those who love a muffin top, fill the cups slightly higher. This adjustment enhances the top’s texture, providing a delightful contrast to the soft interior.
  • Include Chopped Nuts: Elevate the texture by adding chopped nuts like walnuts or pecans.
  • Double Up for Convenience: Consider doubling the recipe and freezing extra muffins. You’ll always have a supply for those busy mornings. Turn your freezer into the ultimate breakfast ally.
Can I use all-purpose flour for these muffins?

Absolutely! Whole wheat flour or all-purpose flour both work well. Whole wheat flour adds nutrition, while all-purpose flour offers a lighter texture.

Can I freeze banana muffins?

Yes! Double the batch and freeze extra muffins for convenient breakfasts. A quick reheat ensures a satisfying and nutritious morning treat.

What is the best way to mash bananas?

Mash bananas using a fork or potato masher until smooth. Overripe bananas work wonders, adding natural sweetness to your muffins.
