This Puff Pastry Christmas Tree is such a cute and fun addition to your holiday table. You can customize it a million different ways to make it exactly how your family likes!

I always love fun and festive treats, but if they are too much work or take any amount of precision, I am not the one you want making it. I always say I craft like a 5 year old, and that also pertains to cute food. So if I can make this, ANYONE can make it!

The puff pastry makes this super easy, and gives it such great flavor. Buttery and flakey puff pastry is always a good idea. For this version, I spread strawberry jam in the middle, but the possibilities here are endless!

You could use different fruit, chocolate, caramel, cinnamon and sugar mixture, you could even go savory with pesto or an olive spread. Seriously endless options for what you want to do here.

What You’ll Need

Be sure to scroll to the bottom of the post for the FULL PRINTABLE recipe card.

  • Puff Pastry – you will need 2 sheets or 1 full box
  • Strawberry Jam
  • Egg
  • Water
  • Raw Sugar
  • Powdered Sugar – this gets dusted on at the end to make it extra pretty, and it really covers up any imperfections you don’t love.

How To Make Puff Pastry Christmas Tree

  • Let the puff pastry sheets thaw, and then unfold and gently roll into a 10×13 inch rectangle. Place the two sheets on top of each other, on a lined baking sheet.
  • Using a sharp knife, or even a pizza cutter, cut into a large triangle. Using the scraps, cut out a rectangle for the tree trunk and a star for the top of the tree.
  • Next you will need to cut your branches. About every 1 inch going up the tree you will want to cut the dough, making sure to leave about 2 inches in the center fully intact.

  • Carefully remove the top layer of puff pastry and then spread on your jam! You don’t want to fill it too full or it will just ooze out the sizes.
  • Place the top layer over the jam and then twist the branches. Taking the top and bottom with the jam in between and gently twist 1-3 times. How many will depend on how “long” the branch is. At the bottom you will probably twist 3 times, at the top only once.

  • Beat together the egg and water and then brush over the top of the tree. Sprinkle with the raw sugar and bake.
  • Once the tree has puffed up and is nicely golden brown remove from the oven.
  • Let it cool slightly and then you can dust with powdered sugar to serve. I like to serve with a light vanilla glaze for dipping as well. But that is completely optional.

Recipe Tips & Suggestions

  • Mix up the filling! You really can use a million different things for the filling. Mixed Berry Jam, Raspberry Sauce, Homemade Nutella or go savory with homemade Pesto.
  • Let it thaw. Give the puff pastry ample time to thaw before you start to unfold the sheets. If you start when they are still frozen it can break and be a lot harder to make it look how you want.
  • Don’t pinch together. Usually when you are filling a dough with something you want to pinch the edges together so the filling doesn’t escape, but not here. The twisting of the branches seals in the jam, so don’t worry about that.
  • Sharp Knife. Use a sharp knife, even a pizza cutter works really well to make the cuts in the puff pastry. They don’t have to be perfect, but you don’t want to rip the dough too much either.

Storage

Unfortunately this is one of those dishes that is really best enjoyed immediately. Puff Pastry doesn’t reheat super well, you never get that buttery and flakey texture back.

So if you are making this for a holiday brunch or dessert, try to take it out of the oven just a few minutes before you want to serve.

Serving Suggestions

This puff pastry Christmas tree is great to serve for brunch or as a dessert. It really depends on what you fill it with. If your family does Christmas morning brunch, this would be a great addition!

Serve alongside your Cranberry Breakfast Cake, Chile Relleno Casserole, Eggnog Coffee Cake and Air Fryer Bacon for an epic spread. Don’t forget your Cranberry Mimosas!
