Whiskey Sour Recipe – a classic whiskey cocktail that is sweet and tangy and delicious. Super easy to make and great for any occasion.
Are you a whiskey drinker? I will admit it is not something that I gravitate towards. It is one of those that can have such a huge range and taste and flavor and even types. So it takes awhile to learn and figure out the differences and what you like.
What is a Whiskey Sour
It is a classic mixed drink with lemon juice, sugar, and whiskey. Over the years lime juice has been added. You will sometimes see it with an egg white foam on top.
It is traditionally served over ice, in a square glass with an orange slice, lemon rind, and maraschino cherry for garnish. But when you make it at home, you can use whatever glassware and garnish you like.
I have been on a mission to try the classic cocktails this year. Drinks like a Gin & Tonic and French 75 that have been around forever!
Whiskey Sour Ingredients
Be sure to scroll to the bottom of the post for the FULL PRINTABLE recipe card.
- Lemon Juice – fresh squeezed makes all the difference.
- Lime Juice – you really want freshly squeezed.
- Simple Syrup – you can make your own by cooking down equal parts sugar and water. Or you can also buy it in any liquor store with the mixers.
- Whiskey
- Maraschino Cherry – for garnish
This whiskey sour recipe is simple and refreshing. Just a couple ingredients come together to make a tasty cocktail.
How To Make A Whiskey Sour
- Add ice to a martini shaker and pour everything into the shaker.
- Put on the lid and shake for about 30 seconds, you want the outside of the shaker to be nice and frosty.
- Pour over a glass filled with ice and top with a cherry.
Recipe Tips & Tricks
- I like to use a martini shaker to make this recipe, because you can get the drink super cold. You can just pour it over ice, but unless you are starting with cold ingredients it can get watered down quickly.
- If you don’t have a shaker, a small pitcher or even a liquid measuring cup works. Just add the ingredients and stir well! Then pour over ice, making sure to strain out any pulp that from the lemons or limes.
- Pick a whiskey that you like drinking. It doesn’t have to be the most expensive one, just something that you enjoy.
- Have extra Whiskey? Make this Whiskey Sour Punch which is great for a party.
- For the best results you really want to squeeze your own lemon and lime juice. With just a few ingredients in a recipe, you want to use the best quality and the bottled stuff just isn’t the same.
What Kind Of Whiskey To Use
One of the first that I tried and really liked is Bulleit. So that is my first choice, because it is also a reasonable price. But Buffalo Trace or Weller are both great choices as well. All bourbons are considered whiskeys you can absolutely use a bourbon you like. You could even use Crown Royal for this and get great results.
