Avocado Fries

Avocado fries are crispy-crunchy on the outside and warm and creamy on the inside. They’re easy to make in the air fryer (or oven), and taste delicious with a side of dipping sauce!

You haven’t lived until you’ve tried this “fried” avocado recipe. Like my air fryer green bean fries, avocado fries are a fun alternative to classic French fries. They’re just as quick and easy to make! Once cooked, these avocado fries are golden and crispy on the outside and nutty and creamy on the inside. All it takes is a few simple ingredients. Serve these with your favorite dipping sauce for a tasty Game Day snack, party appetizer, or weeknight dinner side!

Why You’ll Love This Crispy Avocado Fries Recipe

  • Crunchy and creamy. Avocado fries really are the best of both worlds. The inside is warm and creamy while the breadcrumb coating crisps up nice and golden.
  • 2 ways. I’ll show you how to cook avocado fries in your air fryer or the oven. They’re quick and crispy either way, without actually deep frying.
  • Versatile. As a snack, appetizer, or side dish, avocado fries are hard to resist. Paired with a creamy dressing or dipping sauce, it’s a total game-changer.

Ingredients You’ll Need

Here’s what you’ll need to make homemade avocado fries, along with my notes. Scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of the post for a printable list of ingredients.

  • Avocados – You want 2 large avocados that are ripe enough but still a bit firm. This way they’ll hold their shape when breaded and cooked.
  • Breadcrumbs – I like the large, crunchy texture of Panko breadcrumbs. Feel free to use any type of plain breadcrumbs you have on hand.
  • Flour and Egg – These help bind the breadcrumbs to the avocado.
  • Seasonings – Chili powder, ground cumin, and garlic powder bring savory flavor to the flour coating. You can also use fajita seasoning, Italian seasoning, or another combination of spices.
  • Oil Spray – I recommend olive oil or avocado oil that comes in a non-aerosol spray bottle. Do NOT use aerosol cooking sprays (like PAM) in your air fryer as they’ll damage the finish on the air fryer basket.

Can Avocado Be Cooked?

You might be thinking, “Can I cook raw avocado?” The answer is yes, and it’s delicious when it’s cooked just right. Avocados are most often enjoyed raw and added to salads, spread over toast (or Mexican tostadas), or smashed to make guacamole. If you’ve never tried to cook it before, these warm avocado fries are the best place to start!

How to Make Air Fryer Avocado Fries

Here’s how to make air fryer avocado fries in just a few quick steps. Remember to scroll down to the recipe card for printable instructions.

  • Set up a breading station. Whisk together the flour and seasonings in one bowl, mix the egg and water in a second bowl, and add your breadcrumbs to a third bowl.
  • Prep the avocado. Cut each avocado lengthwise, remove the skin, and slice it into 8 slices.
  • Dip the avocado. This is where it gets a bit messy! One slice at a time, dip your avocado into the seasoned flour, followed by the egg wash, and then dredge the avocado in Panko. Arrange the breaded slices inside the air fryer and give them a spritz with oil.
  • Cook. Air fry the avocado fries at 390ºF for 8 minutes, flipping halfway through.

Can I Make Avocado Fries In the Oven Instead?

Absolutely. To make oven avocado fries, arrange the breaded avocado slices on a lined baking sheet and spray or drizzle them lightly with oil. Bake at 425º F for about 12 minutes. Flip the fries halfway through the baking time.

Tips for Success

Avocado fries are such a fun treat! I just know you’ll love them as much as I do. Here are my tips for getting this easy avocado recipe perfect every time:

  • Get the right avocado. Use avocados that are just ripe, or even slightly underripe. The slices may seem a bit hard at first, but it’ll be easier to dredge them in the coating. The avocado will soften and become creamier as it cooks.
  • Shake off any excess flour. Tap the avocado slices to gently shake off any extra flour before dipping them into the egg and breadcrumbs.
  • Drizzle instead of spray. If you don’t have cooking oil in a spray bottle, go ahead and drizzle the breaded avocado lightly with olive oil instead. A bit of oil helps the Panko brown up nicely. Whatever you do, avoid non-stick cooking sprays as they’ll smoke in the high heat.
  • Don’t overcrowd the air fryer. Make sure to leave enough space between the fries for the hot air to circulate, this way they’ll be nice and crispy. The same goes for baked avocado fries. Try not to overcrowd the baking sheet.
  • Don’t forget to flip. Flip your fries halfway through cooking so that they cook evenly on both sides.

Avocado Fries Serving Suggestions

While your avocado fries are cooking, you’ll have plenty of time to whip up a yummy dipping sauce for serving. These fries taste great dunked in just about any sauce or dressing, but these are some of my favorites:

Enjoy crispy avocado fries as an appetizer with more easy snacks like BBQ chicken nachos and bacon wrapped smokies. As a fun family dinner, serve these fries as a side with turkey burgers or boneless chicken wings. Or, for a lighter meal, I love avocado fries paired with a chicken Caesar salad or crispy vegetarian quinoa cakes.

Storing and Reheating Leftovers

  • Refrigerate. Avocado fries are best enjoyed right away. However, if you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 24 hours.
  • Reheat. Warm the fries in the air fryer or the oven until they’re hot throughout. I don’t recommend microwaving avocado.
