What Is Dump Cake

Dump cakes are an American dessert that is similar to a cobbler. Usually you just dump the ingredients into a baking dish and bake. You don’t need to measure out all the different ingredients or get mixing bowls dirty. It bakes up perfectly with a crunchy and delicious topping and a warm and gooey base.

What You’ll Need

  • Cake Mix
  • Apple Pie Filling
  • Cinnamon
  • Butter
  • Pecans (optional)

I like to add a little bit of cinnamon to the cake mix to give it just a little bit more flavor. And if you are a fan of nuts, pecans make a great addition to this dessert. Apples and pecans go so well together!

What Cake Mix To Use

I like to use a French Vanilla Cake Mix, but any white or yellow cake mix will work. You can even use a Spice Cake Mix for this recipe. Any brand and flavor works great. You just want a relatively neutral flavor so it doesn’t compete with the apples.

How To Make Apple Dump Cake

  1. Pour the apple pie filling into a 13×9 inch baking dish and spread into an even layer.
  2. Next mix together the cinnamon and cake mix and sprinkle evenly over the apple filling. I like to cut off the edge of the cake mix bag, pour in the cinnamon and then shake and use a fork to mix it together in the bag.
  3. If you are using nuts, sprinkle the nuts evenly over the cake mix.
  4. Drizzle the melted butter over the top, trying to evenly cover the cake mix as much as possible.
  5. Bake until the top is golden brown.
  6. Remove from the oven and let cook for at least 10 minutes before serving.

How To Serve

This Easy Apple Dump Cake is best served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and caramel drizzled over the top. You can also top with whipped cream.

Can I Use Fresh Apples

Yes, you can. The bake time is long enough, the apples will get soft. The dessert will change some, as they are not in sugar mixture. Just make sure to peel and thinly slice the apples, so they bake in enough time.

Storage

This cake is best eaten within 1-2 days of making, so it isn’t the best to make much ahead of time. You can make the day before and then just warm slices when you are ready to serve.

Store at room temperature for up to 2 days. After that the top tends to get soggy. Or you can store in the fridge for up to 3 days.
