Consider me officially “on board” with this TikTok-famous boat dip! It might just be my new favorite dip recipe for the summer. This is a cold and creamy sour cream dip infused with the flavors of zesty taco seasoning and ranch, with juicy Rotel tomatoes and plenty of cheese. It takes minutes to make and it’s the perfect dip to take along to potlucks and parties. Like a fiesta in a bowl!

Why You’ll Love This Viral Boat Dip Recipe

  • 5 ingredients. The ingredients are really simple, but they pack tons of flavor into this dip. You only need 5 of them, and they’re easy to find in any supermarket.
  • Zesty Tex-Mex flavor. The taco flavors are seriously addictive! I love using my homemade taco seasoning and ranch dressing mix. It makes this dip taste even fresher.
  • Super quick. While I love melty warm dips like my cheesy artichoke dip and crab rangoon dip, sometimes hot weather calls for a no-bake appetizer. Boat dip is a cold dip, so you can give the oven the day off. All you need to do is give the ingredients a stir!

What Is It Called Boat Dip?

According to social media lore, boat dip got its name because it’s the perfect cool and creamy dip to enjoy next to a body of water. But don’t worry, you don’t need a boat, or a beach, to enjoy a bowl of boat dip with friends! I like to think of boat dip as a fresh take on taco dip. I bring it along to BBQs and picnics to serve with chips, crudites, and crackers, and it’s a huge hit.

Ingredients for the viral TikTok boat dip.

Ingredients You’ll Need

You only need a handful of ingredients to make creamy, Mexican-style boat dip. Here are some notes to get you started. Scroll to the recipe card after the post for a printable ingredients list with the full amounts.

  • Sour Cream – If you don’t have sour cream, or if you’d prefer a lighter dip, substitute it with plain Greek yogurt instead.
  • Seasonings – Boat dip gets its flavor from a combination of taco seasoning and savory ranch dressing mix. I use my homemade versions, but you can also use packets from your favorite store-bought brands.
  • Canned Tomatoes – The original recipe calls for a can of Rotel tomatoes with green chilies. You can use regular canned diced tomatoes, too, or chunky salsa, and add diced jalapeños separately. Whichever kind of tomatoes you choose, make sure to drain them well before you add them to the dip.
  • Shredded Cheese – I use shredded cheddar cheese, but you can use another kind, like provolone, gouda, or even mozzarella.

How to Make the TikTok Boat Dip

Making this boat dip is super quick. There’s no baking involved, so everything comes together in a single bowl. Add everything to a big mixing bowl, stir, and chill the dip in the fridge for an hour. That’s it!

Tips and Variations

  • Drain the Rotel. Don’t forget to drain the canned tomatoes first, otherwise your boat dip will turn out watery.
  • Chill the dip before serving. Budget at least one hour for the dip to chill in the fridge before you serve it. Even better, prepare the dip the day before. This boat dip recipe is very make-ahead friendly, and it gives the flavors a chance to mingle. Don’t skip this step!
  • Adjust the spice. For a spicy dip, add extra chopped jalapeños in addition to Rotel. You can also use only canned diced tomatoes and skip the chilies altogether for a milder dip.
  • Add-ins. Sweet corn kernels are a nice add-in that bulks up the dip. Another good option is drained black beans.

Serving Suggestions

When it comes to serving boat dip, the lake or poolside is optional! I’ll serve this taco dip at get-togethers with everything from tortilla chips to potato chips, crackers to veggies. The Tex-Mex flavors also taste delicious with Fritos and Doritos, or these crispy zucchini corn fritters. Pretty much anything goes. It’s the perfect summer appetizer with fun finger foods like BBQ chicken nachos, crispy flautas, or pinwheel sandwiches.

How Long Does Homemade Dip Last?

This homemade boat dip lasts for a few days in the fridge when stored airtight. Make sure to keep it covered tightly, either wrapped in plastic or in a container. I don’t recommend freezing dairy-based dips since they tend to become watery when thawed.
