Erin’s Notes

  • Quick and easy. Stir the ingredients together, chill, and serve. That’s it — no cooking required.
  • Packed with pickle flavor. Briny pickle juice and crunchy pickle pieces in every bite. No watered-down pickle taste here.
  • Party-ready. Scales up easily for a crowd, or keep it small for a weeknight snack. It’s always the first thing to disappear.
  • Make-ahead friendly. The flavors actually get better after a couple of hours in the fridge, making it perfect to prep in advance.

Ingredients You’ll Need

Be sure to scroll to the bottom of the post for the FULL PRINTABLE recipe card.

  • Cream Cheese – Softened to room temperature so that it’s easier to mix, see below.
  • Sour Cream – I recommend full-fat sour cream. If needed, plain Greek yogurt is a great substitute.
  • Pickles and Pickle Juice – You’ll need chopped dill pickles (the crunchier, the better!) and some pickle juice from the jar. Choose your favorite brand of dill pickles from the refrigerator section.
  • Fresh Dill – You can also use dried dill, but I love using fresh dill sprigs. Chop them up to add to the dip and to use as a garnish.

How Do You Soften a Block of Cream Cheese?

Forgot to take your cream cheese out of the fridge ahead of time? Submerge the sealed block in a bowl of warm water for 10–15 minutes and it’ll soften right up.

How to Make Pickle Dip

1. Add the softened cream cheese, sour cream, chopped dill pickles, pickle juice, and fresh dill to a mixing bowl.

2. Stir or beat everything together until fully combined and creamy.

3. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving to let the flavors meld.

That’s it! Serve chilled with your favorite dippers.

Tips and Variation Ideas

You’re going to love this foolproof pickle dip. These are my final tips for success, plus some simple variations.

  • Chop the pickles finely. Smaller pieces mean more pickle flavor in every scoop. A manual veggie chopper speeds this up.
  • Use a hand mixer. For an extra light and fluffy texture, beat everything together with a handheld mixer instead of stirring by hand.
  • Fresh vs. dried dill. Fresh dill tastes brighter, but dried works great too. Substitute 1 teaspoon dried dill for every 1 tablespoon fresh.
  • Add ranch seasoning. Stir in a packet (or tablespoon) of ranch seasoning for a bold, crowd-pleasing twist. This is probably the most popular variation!
  • Make it spicy. Swap in spicy pickles, or add a pinch of cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes for heat.
  • Add garlic powder. A half teaspoon of garlic powder adds a savory depth that complements the brine beautifully.

What to Serve With Pickle Dip

For dipping: Ruffled potato chips, pretzels, pita chips, crackers, bagel chips, or a platter of fresh veggies like celery, carrots, and cucumbers.

For game day: Pair it alongside crispy green bean fries, BBQ chicken nachos, and bacon-wrapped smokies for a full spread.

As a spread: Use it on hamburgers, sandwiches, chicken wraps, or as a dipping sauce for chicken nuggets and tenders.

How to Store

  • Refrigerate: Transfer to an airtight container and store in the fridge for up to 3–4 days. The flavor actually deepens and gets better over time!
  • Make-ahead: This dip is perfect to make a day before a party. The extra chill time lets the flavors fully develop.
  • Freeze: Freezing is not recommended. The cream cheese and sour cream base tends to separate and become grainy after thawing.
Can I make ahead of time?

Yes! This is one of the best make-ahead dips you can make. Prepare it up to 24 hours in advance and store it in the fridge. The flavors actually improve the longer it sits, so making it the night before a party is highly recommended.

What kind of pickles are best?

Crunchy dill pickles from the refrigerator section work best — brands like Grillo’s, Claussen, or Mt. Olive are great choices. The crunchier the pickle, the better the texture in the dip. Avoid overly soft or sweet pickles.

Can I add ranch seasoning?

Absolutely — ranch and pickles are a natural pairing. Stir in a packet of ranch seasoning mix or a tablespoon of homemade ranch seasoning for a bold, crowd-pleasing version.
