Air fryer chicken burgers are one of our favorite family dinners. This chicken burger recipe is juicy, moist, and so filled with flavor thanks to some simple seasonings. The patties are a cinch to make, and they cook in minutes in the air fryer. All it takes is some crispy fries and a side of veggies to turn these into an easy weeknight meal! You’re going to love whipping up a batch of these hassle-free chicken burgers completely from scratch.

Why You’ll Love These Air Fryer Chicken Burgers

  • Homemade patties. Making chicken burgers from scratch is easy and takes only a handful of ingredients, including lean ground chicken. You’ll want to skip the freezer aisle from now on.
  • Quick. These chicken burgers are cooked in under 10 minutes in the air fryer. It’s a quicker version of traditional burgers cooked on the grill or the stovetop.
  • Kid-friendly. My chicken burgers are juicy and flavorful, yet mild enough that even kids love them. Grating the onion helps hide it from picky eaters!
  • Make-ahead friendly. The homemade chicken patties are make-ahead and freezer-friendly, so you can have this air fryer meal ready to go for busy weeknights.

What You’ll Need

These are the easy ingredients you’ll need to make these air fryer chicken burgers. You’ll find a printable ingredients list in the recipe card below the post.

  • Ground Chicken – We’ll be making our chicken patties from scratch. You’ll need about 1 pound of ground chicken.
  • Onion – Grated or finely minced onion. You can use any type of small onion you’d like.
  • Herbs and Seasonings – Fresh chopped parsley, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper bring flavor to the patties.
  • Cheese – Sliced cheddar or your favorite cheese turn these chicken burgers into chicken cheeseburgers. Other good choices are American cheese, provolone, Monterey Jack, or Pepper Jack cheese.
  • Buns – Classic hamburger buns for serving. Pretzel buns or ciabatta buns are also tasty options.

How to Make Air Fryer Chicken Burgers

Below is a step-by-step overview of how to make chicken burgers that the whole family loves! Scroll down to the recipe card for printable instructions.

  • Combine the patty ingredients. While the air fryer preheats, combine ground chicken with the onion, parsley, and seasonings. I like to use my hands to get everything well mixed.
  • Form the patties. Divide and shape the chicken mixture into four even-sized burger patties.
  • Cook. Cook the chicken patties in the preheated air fryer at 360ºF for 9 minutes. Afterward, top each patty with a cheese slice and cook for 1 minute longer, until the cheese is melted.
  • Serve! Serve your chicken patties on fluffy burger buns loaded with your favorite toppings. See below for ideas and serving suggestions.

How Long Should You Cook Chicken Patties in the Air Fryer?

These fresh chicken burgers take about 9-10 minutes in the air fryer at 360ºF. Check that the chicken patties are done using an instant-read thermometer. The internal temperature should be 165ºF.

Can I Use Frozen Chicken Burgers?

Yes. If you’re in a hurry, you can cook frozen chicken burgers in the air fryer instead of making them from scratch. Frozen chicken patties can be cooked in the air fryer straight from the freezer. Place the patties into the air fryer and cook at 360°F for 16-18 minutes, flipping halfway through.

Helpful Tips and Variations

These are my final tips and easy variations for this air fryer chicken burger recipe:

  • Preheat the air fryer. This gets the air inside nice and hot so that it crisps up the outside of the chicken patties quickly and evenly.
  • Grease your hands when shaping the patties. If needed, give your hands a light spritz with non-stick spray while shaping your chicken patties, to help with sticking.
  • Avoid non-stick sprays in the air fryer. There’s no need to spray the chicken burgers with olive oil before cooking, the patties won’t stick to the basket. As a rule, avoid using non-stick cooking sprays (like PAM) in the air fryer, as they tend to smoke.
  • Different seasonings. In place of the individual seasonings in this patty recipe, try a spoonful of homemade Italian seasoning or Cajun seasoning.
  • Different protein. Swap ground chicken for ground turkey to make air fryer turkey burgers instead. You can also make classic hamburgers with ground beef.
  • Buffalo chicken burgers. For a spicy kick, use the patties from my Buffalo chicken burger recipe
  • Crispy. Try this air fryer crispy chicken sandwich made with breaded homemade chicken patties. It tastes just like a McDonald’s McChicken!

Topping Ideas

We love these homemade chicken burgers topped with fresh guacamole and sliced ripe tomatoes. Here are some more tasty chicken burger toppings to try:

What to Serve With Chicken Burgers

Once your air fryer chicken burgers are loaded with toppings, you’re ready to serve! Enjoy juicy chicken burgers with a side of air fryer frozen French fries or crispy oven-roasted potatoes. We love this easy homemade Cane’s sauce or spicy Cajun sauce for dipping. Burgers also pair great with a creamy Caesar pasta salad, this zesty taco pasta salad, or a veggie side, like air fryer carrots

Can I Make These Chicken Burgers Ahead of Time?

You can prepare the chicken patty mixture up to 1 day ahead of cooking. Store the mixture airtight in the fridge. When you’re ready, shape and cook the patties as directed.

Alternatively, freeze the shaped patties for up to 3 months. Cook them in the air fryer straight from frozen. See the how-to section earlier for details.

Storing and Reheating Leftovers

  • Refrigerate. Store any leftover air fryer chicken burger patties in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat the patties in the air fryer or in the microwave until they’re hot throughout.
  • Freeze. Wrap cooked chicken patties tightly in plastic wrap or store them airtight, and freeze them for up to 3 months. Defrost the patties in the fridge before reheating.
